Quiet Indian Rocks Beach (IRB) a relatively small town just over 1 sq. mile, is a beautiful barrier island community bordering the white sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Legend has it that this town reputedly got its name when a native medicine man miraculously healed his chief with the waters from a natural sulfur spring believed to have been located in Kolb Park across from IRB City Hall. Early settlers seeing the Indians on their way to the "rock encircled spring" would say, "The Indians are on their way to the rocks." The first IRB Bridge from the mainland was built in 1916, and its location, in the "Narrows," indicated by a historical marker. The community grew and developed during its early days, but after World War II that growth started to accelerate rapidly. Today, Indian Rocks Beach is a thriving community that has maintained most of its original character, and supports a lively mixture of recreational activities. From our Nature Preserve, to our parks, museum, to our sandy shores, IRB is recognized for its charming atmosphere and panoramic beaches. Divided by Gulf Boulevard, the main thoroughfare, Indian Rocks Beach has two coasts. Its eastern side features canals, waterfront lounges/restaurants and a large Intracoastal Waterway frontage. The western side offers stunning Gulf of Mexico beaches and residences. IRB connects to the mainland and the city of Largo via the Walsingham Bridge, near the center of town.
To the North, IRB borders the prestigious upscale communities of Belleair Beach, Sand Key and the famous Clearwater Beach. Our community is set aside from the hustle and bustle of coastal tourist areas, but is convenient to Florida’s famous theme parks, Pro Sport complexes and the cities of St. Petersburg and Tampa, along with a 90 minute commute to Orlando.
